Staffordshire Police are investigating reports of purses being stolen from shoppers' bags in Stone town centre on Sunday 23 August.
Officers have not disclosed the specific locations where thefts occurred or the total number of people targeted.
How the thefts happen
Police said thieves use distraction techniques, which means victims may not realise anything has been taken until later. Tactics include deliberately bumping into someone, asking for directions or the time, or creating confusion in crowded areas while another person takes valuables.
Safety advice for shoppers
Staffordshire Police have issued guidance to protect belongings:
Keep handbags fastened and close to your body, with the opening facing inwards. Keep a hand on your bag in busy areas. Avoid keeping wallets, purses or mobile phones in back pockets. Do not put valuables in easily accessible parts of backpacks. Do not attach bags to wheelchairs, mobility scooters, prams or pushchairs.
Report suspicious activity
Anyone who sees suspicious activity can contact police on 101. In an emergency, call 999.
