Staffordshire Police launched a CCTV Registry on Monday 10 August, enabling residents and businesses to register details of cameras covering their property.
The registry creates a map showing police where registered cameras are located. When an incident occurs nearby, investigators can identify property owners who may have captured useful footage.
How the registry works
Registering a camera does not give Staffordshire Police remote access to it or allow officers to view a live feed.
If police believe a registered camera may have captured evidence of a crime, the owner will be contacted by email or text. They will be given a link through which they can choose to upload relevant footage.
Staffordshire Police said: "Your CCTV or doorbell camera may capture key evidence for a case without your realising."
Getting registered
Registration takes less than a minute. Residents can register CCTV systems and video doorbell cameras through the official Staffordshire Police CCTV Registry at https://staffordshirepolicecctvregistry.co.uk
The scheme is being promoted across Staffordshire, including through the Stone Town local policing pages.
