Morrisons and Fairway recorded the biggest weekly reductions, both falling from 169.9p to 167.7p. Fillybrook dropped by 2p to 167.9p, while Darlaston reduced its price by 1p to the same level.

The difference between Stone's cheapest and most expensive standard petrol at the end of the week was 5.2p a litre. On a 55-litre tank, this represented a difference of £2.86.

Petrol Cheaper Than Surrounding Area

Morrisons and Fairway's 167.7p price was the cheapest in a 12-mile comparison. The next lowest price outside Stone was Sainsbury's Stoke-on-Trent at 168.9p, making Stone's two cheapest forecourts 1.2p a litre cheaper — equivalent to 66p on 55 litres.

Looking back to mid-September, petrol prices at several Stone forecourts have broadly returned to earlier levels. Morrisons and Fairway were both charging 167.9p on 15 September and ended this week slightly below that.

Diesel Price Swings

Diesel prices showed greater volatility. Four Stone forecourts reduced their standard diesel prices during the week.

Darlaston recorded the biggest fall, dropping from 197.9p to 194.9p in stages: moving to 196.9p on Sunday, 195.9p on Monday and 194.9p on Tuesday. Morrisons and Fairway both finished at 195.7p, while Fillybrook fell to 195.9p.

Walton Shell moved differently. Its diesel increased from 198.9p to 200.9p on Friday 9 October, briefly crossing the £2 a litre mark before returning below that threshold on Monday 12 October at 199.9p, where it remained at the end of the week.

The gap between Stone's cheapest and most expensive standard diesel widened considerably. A week earlier there was only 1p between the five local forecourts. By 14 October, there was a 5p difference between Darlaston at 194.9p and Walton at 199.9p — worth £2.75 on 55 litres.

Diesel remains cheaper outside Stone. Asda Wolstanton had the cheapest standard diesel in the wider search at 190.7p a litre, 4.2p below Darlaston's 194.9p (equivalent to £2.31 on 55 litres before accounting for travel costs). Last week the corresponding gap was 6.2p a litre.

Compared with mid-September, diesel prices have risen at most Stone forecourts. Morrisons, Fairway and Fillybrook were all at 191.9p on 15 September; by 14 October, Morrisons and Fairway were 3.8p higher at 195.7p, and Fillybrook was 4p higher at 195.9p. Darlaston rose from 193.9p to 194.9p.

Super Unleaded and Premium Diesel

Super Unleaded showed minimal movement. Darlaston was the only Stone forecourt where the recorded price changed during the week, falling by 1p from 188.9p to 187.9p. Fillybrook remained the cheapest in Stone at 179.9p, while Walton remained the most expensive at 194.9p — a 15p difference, equivalent to £8.25 on 55 litres.

Premium Diesel saw more significant changes. Fillybrook reduced its price by 4p from 209.9p to 205.9p. Darlaston made a series of reductions, ending the week at 214.9p compared with 217.9p a week earlier. Walton remained at 224.9p. This created a 19p difference between the cheapest and most expensive Premium Diesel currently available in Stone — equivalent to £10.45 on 55 litres.
