Stone's pubs have long served as places for residents to meet friends, catch up with familiar faces and enjoy an evening out. While traditional pubs remain part of the town's leisure landscape, the way people spend their time has shifted in recent years.
Changing Entertainment Choices
Smartphones, online entertainment and changing social habits have introduced new leisure options. Streaming services, mobile games and social media now compete for attention both at home and away from home.
At the same time, established pub activities continue. Pool, quizzes and live music remain part of Stone's pub scene. The Red Lion offers free pool sessions, The Bridge Inn hosts open mic nights, The Swan features live music, and Crown Wharf is used for organised activities including local group meetings.
Digital entertainment and traditional pub games serve different purposes. Games such as darts, pool and quizzes encourage people to participate together, while entertainment accessed through a personal device can be enjoyed individually.
Stone's Brewing Heritage
Stone has a long history of brewing and pubs, with several establishments now closed. Joule's Brewery operated from its Crown Street site before closing in 1974. The opening of Crown Wharf in July 2021 brought the Joule's name back to Stone through a new brewery tap on the former brewery site.
Historical records document other lost establishments. A 2013 article by Stone Historical Society chairman Philip Leason explored former pubs including The Unicorn, The Blue Bell, The Castle and The Union.
Finding Out What's On
How people discover pub events has also changed. Social media and online event listings now complement traditional methods such as posters, local advertising and word of mouth.
