Lidl has progressed its plans for a new supermarket near Aston Roundabout by submitting a screening opinion request to Stafford Borough Council. The application determines whether an Environmental Impact Assessment will be required as part of the planning process.
The proposed discount foodstore would be built on agricultural land at Forge Farm, Stafford Road, Stone, between the A51 and A34. The site covers approximately 1.1 hectares.
Store Specifications
The foodstore would have a total gross internal area of 2,184 sq m with a net sales area of 1,369 sq m. The development would include 126 car parking spaces and a trolley bay adjacent to the store entrance.
These figures represent a change from the proposals presented during Lidl's public consultation in June 2026. At that time, the sales area was listed as 1,529 sq m and parking spaces as 130.
Background
The June consultation saw leaflets outlining the proposed development distributed to homes in the Stone area. The current screening application, reference 26/42653/ESS, now provides updated details of the scheme.
In its covering letter to the council, Lidl stated that the site has an existing vehicular access from the A51 and benefits from a sustainable location with frequent bus services and good pedestrian and cycle connections. Footways are provided along the northern side of the A51 and western side of the A34, with nearby bus stops on Stafford Road serving Stone town centre and Stafford.
