Walton Warriors, a newly established under nines football team, drew 4-4 with Florence Gold in their first match on Sunday 19 July at Manor Hill First School. The friendly came less than three months after the club was set up and provided players with their first opportunity to play together before joining the North Staffs Junior Youth League in September.
Walton Warriors described the result as particularly encouraging given that Florence Gold's under nines team is now in its third season. The club praised the determination and teamwork shown by its players, with families and supporters attending the match.
Club leadership and support
Rich Draper, who serves as chairman, manager and trainer, said: "The support from local people has been huge and I'd like to thank everyone for all the kind words and help in getting this club set up and for also turning up to support us on our first outing. I hope you were all as proud of the boys as I was."
The team's red and white home kit was funded with support from Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, with the club thanking Sarah Saunders for helping to secure the funding. The club also received a £100 donation from Kerry O'Sullivan, £250 from Clive and Dawn Draper, and £200 from Stone Lions Club.
Recruitment and next steps
Walton Warriors are now looking for a goalkeeper and a small number of outfield players ahead of their first league season. Places are open to children who will enter Year 4 in September, with both experienced players and those new to football welcome to join.
Training begins at Pirehill First School at 6pm on Tuesday 28 July and will continue each Tuesday evening.
